CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Water puddles on the floor, and I run one of the towels Riker set out over my skin. Itâs too sensitive, too hot, probably from the heat of the pool.
The pool sloshes, the water noisily lapping at the perimeter as Riker washes. Presumably washes, that is.
Iâm not brave enough to turn around look. I already saw enough.
I want to look at him again.
My eyes close, my breath stuttering at the thought. I swallow wrong, and choke out a cough. The towelâs wrapped around me, tight, and I stumble into a chair, one facing away from the tub and all the danger it holds. I steeple my hands, staring at the entrance to the room, then cover my face with my hands.
What in the name of dust and stars is wrong with me?
We kissed. My stomach tightens in anticipation, remembering the slick heat of his mouth over mine, the way he pulled my head back, tangling in my braid. His possessiveness, the possessiveness of it burns through me like a brand.
Iâm so mixed up inside. I thought I hated him⦠all this time, have hated him. But the way he looks at me â the way he treats meâ no one has ever looked at me like that. And what he said earlier, about how it was never nothing with me⦠My mind swims, and itâs not just from blood loss.
I blow out a breath, and its hot against my face, my cheeks red under my hands.
I want him, by the seven suns, do I want him.
âRiker, why? Why did you save me? Why are we here and doing this?â The words come out on a croak, and thereâs nothing sexy about it. Itâs raw, like theyâre tearing up my throat on their way out.
Because Iâm invested in the answer. Iâm invested in knowing.
I need to know.
My hands are still tucked around my face, and I jerk in surprise at the feeling of his rough fingers circling my wrists, tugging them away. My breath comes in short pants, and when I look up, he looms over me, wearing nothing but a towel, wrapped around his hips. Water droplets stand out on his skin, glistening in the artificial light.
My lips part, because heâs stunning. Every inch of him is built for power and violence, but thereâs an elegant symmetry that makes my mouth go dry. Then thereâs a chiseled jawline, covered in a rough stubble that only makes him look even more enticing, the heated look he gives me that makes me squirm against the chair.
âWhy?â I ask again, my voice husky and unfamiliar.
He bends low, rubbing the wet strands of my hair together, like he did on the ship, that day that seems nearly like a lifetime ago now. It irritated me, then. At least, I think it did.
Now it just makes me want more, the need for more pounding through me.
âYou want me to say it again, say it outright?â He leans even closer, so close our foreheads nearly touch.
